Owner Responsibilities

The saying “it takes a Village to raise a child” also rings true when considering the combined efforts required to maintain a peaceful and desirable place to live. Through joint effort of municipal staff and residents the Village has been successful in creating a Village where “everybody is a somebody”, where continued growth and expansion for future generations will develop.

The Village produced a “Good Neighbour Guide” which outlines some of the property standards and by-law regulations that have been adopted by municipal Council. It is these guidelines and regulations that have assisted in creating a desirable place to live. Please contact the office to request your copy of the guide.

Stormwater Maintenance

What is Stormwater?

Stormwater refers to rainwater, melted snow or water that runs off our roofs, driveways and roads rather than soaking into the ground. It either flows into rivers and waterways or is channeled into storm sewers.

Storm Water Drain Maintenance

Stormwater drains throughout the Village are providing drainage through a series of connected pipes underground which aids in the prevention of flooding by draining away rainwater from buildings and roadways. Village Public Works staff work to maintain Stormwater drains that are free and clear from any debris which may redirect Stormwater, causing potential flooding or road washouts. It is important for residents to understand the Village Stormwater system as proper maintenance can mitigate potential hazards or flooding.

Protect Your Water

Protect Your Water SealContaminants, such as oil, grease, metals and pesticides, tend to build up on surfaces in urbanized areas, these contaminants come from sources such as pavement deterioration, tire and brake pad wear, vehicle emissions and spills. They may also come from yard and garden care, and pet feces. Stormwater runoff picks up these contaminants and can transfer them to streams or groundwater. The Village offers residents safe disposal of such contaminants through the use of green fill sites, Hazmat Days and through many Ontario Stewardship programs facilitated through the TRI R Landfill site.

Storm Water Drain Maintenance

Sump Pump Systems

A sump pump system is designed to capture surface or ground water that enters basements/crawl spaces and pump it away from the house. Cross connections (when sump pumps discharge into the sanitary sewer system) are against Village ordinance and pose economic and environmental problems. This can also cause damage to your property if the wastewater collection system becomes overloaded or a blockage occurs backing up and overflowing into your property. Water pumped by sump pumps can be referred to as clear water and during rainy season and spring melt can overload pumping stations causing excessive power usage, public works call-ins, reaching capacity of storage (lagoons) and increased wastewater treatment costs. The sump pump discharge should be to either the storm water system (ditch, culvert) or even better to the lawn, if to the lawn ensure it is at least 2 meters away from the home for infiltration and not into a neighbor’s property.
