Burk’s Falls Unleashes New Dog Park at Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony

Location: Knight Brother’s Park – Burk’s Falls Dog Park

The Village of Burk’s Falls proudly celebrated the official ribbon cutting and grand opening of the Burk’s Falls Dog Park on Tuesday morning at Knight Brother’s Park. Despite the cold, blustery weather, Council members, community partners, and residents gathered to mark the completion of a long-anticipated community space made possible through generosity and collaboration.

The dog park was brought to life thanks to a generous donation of materials from Savour This: Artisan Bakery and Café, whose support helped turn a community idea into a finished project. Mayor Chris Hope acknowledged the impact of the donation during the ceremony, stating:

“The donation from Savour This sealed the deal and allowed us to bring this wonderful dog park to everyone who has been looking forward to it in our community.”

Speaking directly to Savour This representatives, Mayor Hope added:

“On behalf of all of us, thank you for the wonderful things that you’re doing. We really appreciate partners like you.”

Louise Clodd, representative from Savour This, shared appreciation on behalf of owner Danielle Clodd, noting that she was thrilled to support the project and happy to help provide a welcoming space for dogs and their owners, with hopes of contributing to even more community improvements in the future.

Councillor Ashley Brandt, who has been passionate about the dog park from the beginning and worked closely with a dedicated group of community members, shared the following after the event:

“With hearts full of gratitude, we celebrate what can happen when a Village comes together to get things done. This dog park is a testament to community generosity, collaboration, and follow-through. We are especially thankful to Savour This: Artisan Bakery and Café for their very generous donation of materials and their meaningful support of this project. Initiatives like this begin with community ideas, and it’s those voices that help guide Council’s priorities. Thank you for showing us the true power of community kindness.”

Additional images capture the strong community turnout, including residents, Deputy Mayor Sean Cotton, and Councillor Nancy Kyte, all coming together to celebrate the opening.

While the Burk’s Falls Dog Park has been enjoyed by the public for some time, the ribbon cutting marked its official opening, and it has been wonderful to already see the enjoyment it brings to the community’s four-legged residents and their families.

Ribbon Cutting Celebrates Major Investment in the Village of Burk’s Falls Manufacturing

On Friday, November 14th, Brawo Brassworking Limited held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate significant upgrades to its manufacturing operations, supported by a $400,000 grant from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC). Mayor Chris Hope attended on behalf of the Village of Burk’s Falls, alongside MPP Graydon Smith representing the Provincial Government.
The funding enables Brawo Brassworking to add a new hydraulic press and induction heater, increasing production capacity, improving efficiency, reducing waste, and supporting local employment. The upgrades will protect 115 existing jobs and create up to four new skilled positions in the near future.
“We are proud to see this level of investment in our community,” said Mayor Chris Hope. “Brawo Brassworking has long been an important employer in Burk’s Falls, and this support helps secure local jobs while strengthening our regional economy.”
MPP Graydon Smith also highlighted the impact of the investment: “This funding ensures that local manufacturers like Brawo Brassworking can continue to innovate, grow, and compete globally. It’s a win for the company, for Almaguin, and for Northern Ontario.”
The Village of Burk’s Falls congratulates Brawo Brassworking on this milestone and extends its appreciation to the Province of Ontario and NOHFC for their continued commitment to economic development in the region.

A Home Run for Burk’s Falls!
July 1st, 2025: BURK’S FALLS, ON — The Village of Burk’s Falls is proud to share a special milestone with our community following a successful partnership with Jays Care Foundation, generously sponsored by TD. Thanks to this collaboration, the ball diamonds at Knight Brothers Park have received a much-needed and long-awaited refresh—bringing a major league feel to our local field of dreams.
To commemorate the project, Jays Care presented the Village with a custom Toronto Blue Jays jersey featuring "BURK’S FALLS" stitched proudly across the back. Rather than tuck this keepsake away, the Village knew just the place to showcase it—Riverbowl, home of Dan and Haleigh Lawrence’s remarkable sports memorabilia collection.
They have spent decades curating an impressive display of sports history, generously sharing it with the community through his collection at Riverbowl. The addition of this jersey is a tribute to the spirit of sport, partnership, and community pride that lives on in Burk’s Falls.

Last week, we proudly celebrated the grand opening of our improved Knight Brothers Field of Dreams — and what a day it was for Burk’s Falls.

This incredible upgrade, completed in 2024, has already made a meaningful impact on our community. But today, surrounded by families, young athletes, and community members, we had the chance to officially open the field and celebrate what it means to all of us.

Thank you to the Jays Care Foundation for our improved Knight Brothers Field of Dreams, made possible by TD . Your support has not only revitalized this important space but has also helped us invest in the future of our youth, our community spirit, and the power of sport to bring people together.

This field is more than just a diamond — it’s a place where kids build confidence, where teams learn the value of working together, and where memories are made. We’re excited to see the next generation take the field, dream big, and play hard.

On behalf of the entire Village of Burk’s Falls, thank you to everyone who made this project possible. Today was a home run for all of us.

Environment Canada is warning of a significant weather event expected to hit Southern and a large portion of Northern Ontario. Threats include significant snowfall, strong winds, blowing snow, reduced visibility, rain, ice, flash freezes, black ice, utility outages and cold temperatures beginning December 22 through to at least December 24.

Residents are reminded to have an emergency kit prepared in the case of outages or being snowed in.
When out, wear proper footwear for the conditions, warm snow gear, and be visible.
Crews will be out to clear snow/ice as appropriate but travelers should expect delays.
Hazardous travel conditions are expected. Please help keep our community safe by slowing down when driving.
Use good judgement and be prepared.

Please take note that water users of the Village of Burk’s Falls may experience discolouration and short period s of low pressure over the weekend while the Fire Department conducts training. The training will be during the day on Saturday, November 26 and Sunday, November 27th, 2022 at the Fire Hall and on Commercial Drive.

If you experience discolouration please run a small stream of cold water until your water clears up.

The Village of Burk’s Falls has initiated a project to update the Village of Burk’s Falls Official Plan and to

develop a Comprehensive Zoning By-law for the Village.

An Official Plan provides the Village with a framework for development and growth in the Village. The

current Official Plan was approved in 2011. The Planning Act requires that the Village undertake an

update to their Official Plan at least every ten years.

The Comprehensive Zoning By-law regulates the use of land on a site-level basis. Burk’s Falls does not

currently have a Comprehensive Zoning By-law, this project will develop the comprehensive zoning bylaw

for the community.

The purpose of this Open House will be to introduce the project, provide opportunity for feedback on the

current planning documents and provide a timeline for the approval of an updated Official Plan and a

Comprehensive Zoning By-law. The consulting team will be on hand to answer questions.

There will be a number of opportunities to be involved in the project. This introduction meeting will be an

informal Open House. The Public Meeting pursuant to the Planning Act (Ontario) will be conducted at a

later date to be undertaken by the Village of Burk’s Falls.

Mobile Vaccine Clinic is on the Move

NIPISSING & PARRY SOUND, ON – The COVID-19 vaccine rollout is on the move as the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit (Health Unit) and the City of North Bay launc h the Mobile Vaccine Clinic; a retrofitted city bus. Starting Tuesday, August 31, the accessible and convenient mobile clinic will travel across the Health Unit’s district to help reduce barriers to getting the COVID-19 vaccine.

“Throughout the vaccine rollout we have adapted to the needs of those in our community. Through our partnership with the City of North Bay, we are able to deliver COVID-19 vaccination services exactly where they are needed. Mobile clinics make getting the COVID-19 vaccine more convenient and accessible,” says Dr. Jim Chirico, Medical Officer of Health. “Appointments will not be required to use the bus, and both Moderna and Pfizer will be offered wherever the bus stops.”

“We must work together to ensure we continue to increase our COVID-19 vaccination numbers. The City of North Bay is proud to support this initiative and help reach people throughout the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit’s region,” states Mayor Al McDonald. “The bus is another way our Health Unit is reducing barriers for those who want the COVID-19 vaccine, and I encourage those who are not yet fully vaccinated to take advantage of this new option.”

Individuals wishing to attend a COVID-19 vaccine clinic or attend a mobile vaccine clinic can stay up-to-date with locations, dates and times on the Health Unit’s website at myhealthunit.ca/GetVaccinated. You can also walk-in to use the mobile vaccine clinic upon seeing it set up in the community.

All COVID-19 safety precautions will be followed. Individuals are required to follow public health measures, including wearing a face covering and practicing physical distancing. If possible, individuals should bring a piece of identification when attending a clinic. Do not attend a clinic if experiencing symptoms of COVID-19.

Curbside Collection Survey

Council would like to inform residents the Village will be re-evaluating current curbside collection practices including the allocation of complimentary curbside collect ion tags.

The Province is implementing ‘full producer responsibility” for waste management by 2025. This will change waste and recycling practices throughout Ontario.

Council is taking the opportunity to consult with members of the public to gather information that will assist us with future decisions and considerations. Please take a moment to complete this short survey to provide feedback as to how you currently manage your waste and inform of us of how you would like to see collection move in a more responsible direction. The Village will have to provide information to the Province for the final implementation plans and we need your input. Let your voice be heard.

The Village would like to remind residents that the cost of curbside collection continues to increase annually. Since 2019 Village collection costs have increased by $2,400 and waste disposal has significantly increased by $4,524. The Village strongly encourages its residents to responsibly participate in our recycling program. When residents do not rinse out containers, leave food and other garbage in containers prior to placing items in the Blue Box, items are deemed “contaminated” and are immediately discarded back into the waste steam. Containers that have been used to store cigarette butts or bacon fat, should not be placed in the Blue Box for recycling.

Contaminated items decrease the rebate received for Blue Box materials sold to producers for reuse and add to the cost of the curbside collection. This increased cost is a direct burden to residents of $6,600 a year.

Three Ticks Test Positive for Lyme Disease Confirms Health Unit

NIPISSING & PARRY SOUND, ON – The North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit (Health Unit) confirms that since April 2021, three black-legged ticks found in the district have tested positive for the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, a bacteria that can cause Lyme disease. Two of the ticks that tested positive were from the North Bay area, and one was from the Parry Sound area.

So far in 2021, a total of 37 ticks have been submitted for identification, of which 19 have been identified as black-legged ticks, also called deer tick or Ixodes scapularis. Although the number of ticks testing positive for the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi is seemingly low, the Health Unit reminds the public to exercise caution when outdoors.

Methods to prevent tick bites include:

Use bug spray or other insect repellants that contain DEET or Icaridin;
Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants, and tuck your shirt into your pants and your pants into your socks;
Wear light-coloured clothing to spot ticks more easily;
Search your clothes and body for ticks at least once a day, paying special attention to areas such as the groin, navel, armpits, scalp, behind ears and knees;
Don’t forget to tick check children in your care;
Try to stay on cleared paths when possible, as ticks are more commonly found in wooded areas, or in tall grasses, bushes and shrubs; and
Take a shower as soon as you can after being outdoors.

How to remove a tick:

If you find a tick on your body, remove it carefully with tweezers. Grasp the tick by the head as close to the skin as possible. If parts of the tick’s mouth break off and remain in the skin, remove them with tweezers. If you can’t remove the mouthparts, leave them alone and let the skin heal. Collect the tick, and make note of where you believe to have encountered it. See your health care provider right away, and when possible, bring the tick to the Health Unit.

Quick Facts

There was one confirmed case of Lyme disease reported between January 1, 2020, and December 31, 2020, for residents of the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit area.
Black-legged ticks are not common to the area; however, ticks can travel on birds and deer.
Black-legged ticks can carry Lyme disease. Ticks are small blood-sucking insects that cannot fly. They live in wooded or brushy areas and attach themselves to passing animals or people. While most ticks do not carry diseases, it’s important to avoid them and check for and remove them as soon as you find them.
A person can become infected with Lyme disease if they are bitten by an infected tick.
In most cases, the tick must usually be attached for at least 24 hours for the bacterium that causes Lyme disease to be passed on to the host.
The most common symptom of Lyme disease is an expanding skin rash, which can appear between three and 30 days after a bite.
If left untreated, other symptoms may develop including fever, chills, headache, fatigue muscle and joint aches, problems with your heartbeat, breathing, balance and short-term memory.
The earlier the treatment is received the better.
There has been an increase in confirmed cases of Lyme disease in Ontario, partly due to an increase and expansion of black-legged tick populations to new areas of the province.
Infected ticks are continuing to spread and can now also be found in the Simcoe-Muskoka district, York Region and all of Eastern Ontario as well as Hamilton and parts of Northwestern Ontario. NIPISSING & PARRY SOUND, ON – As we enter Step 1 of the Roadmap to Reopen tomorrow, June 11, 2021, the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit (Health Unit) is launching a COVID-19 Guide to Summer Activities page on their website. This webpage is designed to help individuals navigate through provincial restrictions during the three steps of reopening while enjoying their favourite summer activities safer. “We’ve all shown tremendous effort over the last six months to limit the spread of COVID-19. Everyone has had to make sacrifices, including staying home, getting vaccinated, and following public health measures,” shares Dr. Jim Chirico, Medical Officer of Health. “I continue to encourage people to use their best judgement and be cautious in all activities, and to use this guide as a tool to help keep yourself and your loved ones safer.”

Attention residents: During a recent road patrol, Public Works staff inventoried stop signs within the Village. During this patrol, eight intersections were identified w here the installation of a stop sign could improve safety. With a recommendation to Council and a bylaw now passed authorizing the signs, Public Works will be installing stop signs at all below noted intersections.

As a reminder The Highway Traffic Act Section 136 (1), stipulates that every driver approaching a stop sign at an intersection,

(a) shall stop his or her vehicle or streetcar at a marked stop line or, if none, then immediately before entering the nearest crosswalk or, if none, then immediately before entering the intersection; and

(b) shall yield the right of way to traffic in the intersection or approaching the intersection on another highway so closely that to proceed would constitute an immediate hazard and, having so yielded the right of way, may proceed. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 136

Additionally, Section 144 (28) notes that pedestrians have the right of way, (28) Every pedestrian who lawfully enters a roadway in order to cross may continue the crossing as quickly as reasonably possible despite a change in the indication he or she is facing and, for purposes of the crossing, has the right of way over vehicles. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 144 (28). The Village remains committed to the safety and wellbeing of the community. Council and staff thank residents for their continued support in these efforts.

Public Service Announcement: Health Unit Launches COVID-19 Dedicated Toll-Free Phone Number 1-844-478-1400

NIPISSING & PARRY SOUND, ON – As of Wednesday morning, the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit’s COVID-19 call centre has a new toll-free phone number (1-844-478-1400). Individuals looking to book a COVID-19 vaccine appointment or discuss general, or school concerns related to COVID-19 are now to call the toll-free number.

The change to a dedicated COVID-19 line was made in an effort to improve the call experience and open phone lines for those trying to reach other departments in the Health Unit. Upgrades include:

No more dropped calls when in the queue.
Te chnology enhancements that will inform anticipated wait time, position in queue and provide callback functionality.

The Health Unit is also working to increase the number of staff working the call centre. For COVID-19 vaccination booking, individuals who are able to book online are still encouraged to do so to help keep lines available for those who have questions or are unable to book online.

Have Symptoms of COVID-19? Arrange to be Tested

NIPISSING & PARRY SOUND, ON – The North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit (Health Unit) is reminding the public when they have any one symptom of COVID-19 to self-isolate immediately and arrange to be tested. Although the Health Unit’s case count remains low compared to other areas of the province, the district has seen continued increase in reported cases in our region since around the beginning of April. At the same time, testing rates across our district have been lower than usual since mid-March. This means there are likely more cases in the community than are reported in the district numbers, and we must continue to work together as a district to help slow the spread.

“We all know what to do, we just need to put it into practice,” explains Dr. Jim Chirico Medical Officer of Health. “Anyone who has symptoms of COVID-19 needs to self-isolate immediately, arrange to be tested, and continue the isolation until a negative test result is confirmed. Individuals are not to self-diagnose their symptoms.”

Individuals who wish to be tested can book an appointment at any of the Assessment Centres in or near our district.

Child ren 8 years old and under, along with anyone with COVID symptoms, is recommended to book a COVID test in the Main Assessment Clinic, not Drive-through, so a physician or nurse can do a clinical assessment at the same time as the COVID swab. A physician is on-site during all clinic hours and is able to swab infants and children under 2 years old as well.

RE: Health Care Survey in Almaguin – Focus on Nurse Practitioner

In 2020 the 12 Almaguin communities started the process of creating a region wide Community Safety and Well Being Plan (CSWBP). Through this process we consulted with local agencies and conducted a survey open to all residents of Almaguin. From the survey the top two priorities from the community point of view were access to physical health services (49.28%) and access to services (49.04%).

The structure of the CSWBP is that of an Advisory Committee mandated membership from OPP, School Boards, Mental Health, Children’s Aid, LHINs, and Social Services and municipal representatives. With the results of the survey three Task Forces have been developed (top 3 priorities); one is Health Care.

There have been three task force meetings over the past few months with local health care services and agencies, physicians, and existing committees. The strongest recommendation resulting from these meetings is to recruit physicians to fill gaps and look for alternative opportunities for non-rostered patients. All parties agree that health care in Almaguin is a priority.

The community survey respondent demographic was married females over the age of 36. In total there were 445 responses representing only 2.25% of the Almaguin permanent population. In asking of the overall physical health 46.09% said their health was poor to good. Only 4.94% strongly agreed that access to health care was adequate. When looking for comments on what residents wish they had access to, of the 218 answers, the number one comment, region wide, was the need for a doctor or nurse practitioner then for walk in clinics.

The Almaguin Highlands Health Council, along with other medical center physicians and committees have been working on doctor recruitment with some success but there is still more need required. The Health Task Force also spoke of nurse practitioners and a possible clinic within Almaguin. Work to research this opportunity is on-going and we are now looking for the community’s comments through the attached survey.

There are different governance and set up models to review and all will be considered once we have the feedback of those reporting they need physical health services.

Please widely share the survey so that we obtain the best information in forming how to move forward.

If you have any information regarding health care statistics or wait lists that you can share, we would be excited to add that to our research and ultimately our decision making/recommendations.

This Spring Break, Do Your Part: Stop the Surge

NORTHERN ONTARIO, ON - As we approach the Easter holiday and spring break, the northern Medical Officers of Health are asking all community members in northern Ontario t o work together to prevent another surge in COVID-19.

In many parts of northern Ontario, COVID-19 infection rates have been at some of the highest levels since the pandemic began. COVID-19 activity is rising again across the province, and the rapid spread of variants of concern (VOCs) is causing aggressive outbreaks, and in some cases, more severe illness, even in younger people.

We know that everyone has made tremendous sacrifices for over a year. And there is ongoing hope, as more vaccine becomes available, week by week. At this very moment in time, however, the vast majority of our community members are not yet immunized. This means risky activities like gatherings and travel must still be avoided by all.

To protect the most vulnerable in our communities, and to stop the surge from overwhelming our local hospitals and frontline health care workers, we are calling on all northern Ontarians to each do our part to keep our families and communities safe. And we ask everyone to do this with the spirit of kindness and perseverance that has been such a tremendous and vital part of our northern communities' response to the pandemic.

Top 3 Actions for All Families and Households

1. Stay 2 metres apart from anyone you don't live with.

Staying connected is important for wellbeing. The safest ways to connect are by phone or online.
Being outdoors is less risky than indoors, and everyone should still be 2 metres apart.
Closed, indoor spaces are risky. Keep time spent indoors brief, and stay masked and distanced at all times. In the grey-lockdown zone, it is illegal to gather indoors with anyone you do not live with.
Avoid gatherings, shared meals or carpools outside your household - these are common ways that COVID-19 spreads from one family to another. A person infected with COVID-19 can spread the virus to others 48 hours before they even feel sick.

2. Have symptoms? Get tested straight away, and until you have results, you and everyone else you live with must stay home.

Because the variants spread so aggressively, when one person in the home is sick, the entire household must stay home until test results are available.
Mild symptoms, even a runny nose can be COVID-19. Only testing can tell.
Do not go to work or school, or visit anyone if you have symptoms.

3. Avoid non-essential travel or receiving visitors, especially between different colour zones.

Postpone non-essential trips to avoid the risk of exposure.
For essential trips, such as for work or medical care, plan ahead. If possible, stay in accommodations where you have a separate bedroom and bathroom. Wear a mask and stay distanced from others at all times.
If a student is returning home from college or university, plan ahead. Avoid risky close contact exposures 14 days before travel. Postpone travel if sick. In case of a need to quarantine or isolate because of exposure or illness, arrange a safe space to do so, ideally with a separate bedroom and bathroom.

Top 3 Outbreak Prevention Tips for Local Businesses

1. Follow the regulations of your local zone and stay as contactless as possible.

As much you can, make customer interactions contactless, and work from home virtually.
Use PPE (medical mask + face shield or eye protection), and wear masks properly to cover your nose, mouth and chin, when providing services to unmasked customers within 2 metres. Restaurants, bars, gyms, and personal service settings like barber shops or hair salons are all common places where customers are not masked when receiving services.

2. Keep your guard up, even on breaks: stay distanced and masked in break rooms, staff areas, and carpools.

Because coworkers are familiar with one another, it's easy to let your guard down during breaks. Many workplace outbreaks have happened when people shared meals together, or didn't stay masked and distanced while taking breaks or carpool ing.

3. Screen everyone. Every day.

Daily symptom screening helps remind people who are sick to stay home, whether they are customers or employees.
As m uch as you can, have supportive workplace policies that allow people to take sick time.

NIPISSING & PARRY SOUND – The North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit (Health Unit) is reminding the public that appointments for COVID-19 vaccinations can only be booked online or by phone. Individuals will not be able to book an appointment in-person at Health Unit office locations. Appointment booking opens on Monday, March 15, 2021 at 9 a.m. for individuals born in 1941 or before.

How to book an appointment online:

Have your green Ontario health card ready.
Visit www.myhealthunit.ca/COVID-19Vaccine and click “Book an Appointment” to open the provincial Online Booking System.
Follow the online instructions.

How to book an appointment by phone:

Have your green Ontario health card ready.
Dial 1-800-563-2808 and choose option 5, then follow the prompts. The call centre will be open to book appointments from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday.

Health Unit Closes OFSC Snowmobile Trails

NORTH BAY, ON – The North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit (Health Unit) is requiring all Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs’ (OFSC) trails and trails utilizing Crown Land in the Health Unit district to close effective January 21, 2021 at 12:01 a.m. for the duration of the Stay-at-Home Order and will be reassessed at such time. This closure is done under the Medical Officer of Health’s ability to increase restrictions within their district.

In accordance with the provisions of the Emergency Management and Civil Protections Act, and the Regulations thereunder, specifically Stay-at-Home-Order, and the Reopening Ontario (A Flexible Response to COVID-19) Act, and the Regulations thereunder, specifically Rules for Areas in Stage 1, the Medical Officer of Health for the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit deems it reasonable and necessary to close all Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs’ (OFSC) trails and trails utilizing Crown Land in the Health Unit district effective January 21, 2021 at 12:01 a.m. throughout the entire district served by the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit in order to decrease or eliminate the risk to community health presented by COVID -19.

“We have been told to stay home and we need to do this. I have received many complaints about people travelling from other districts to use the local snowmobile trails, thus putting our district at risk of COVID-19. The OFSC recommends that snowmobilers avoid trailering and travelling to destinations that are outside their health unit region to snowmobile, but people have not taken the direction seriously,” explains Dr. Jim Chirico, Medical Officer of Health. “We are also seeing groups of snowmobilers congregating on trails, in parking lots and other locations not maintaining a two metre distance and exceeding the gathering limits.”

On January 12, 2021, the province of Ontario announced the change in outdoor gathering limits from 10 to five. Individuals must maintain a two metre physical distance from people they do not live with. Individuals who live alone are allowed to be in close contact with one unique home, but must physically distance with anyone who does not live in that home. Face coverings are also recommended to be worn outdoors.

“I do not recommend anyone gather with people you do not live with or if you live alone people who are not a part of your unique close contact home,” states Dr. Chirico. “We are seeing an increase of COVID-19 cases locally and the provincial projections do not look good. Our local hospitals have very little surge capacity and limited resources which must be protected for the health and safety of our community. We must take extra precautions to keep our district safe. However, the key is we must all work together.”

Outdoor physical activity, such as walking, running, playing outside and biking are important for physical and mental health and still recommended by the Health Unit. However, all activities outside the house need to be done with extreme caution, following the COVID-19 public health measures, and should be done close to home.

If you think you may have COVID-19 symptoms or have been in close contact with someone who has it, first self-isolate and then use Ontario's Self-Assessment Tool to see if you need to seek further care. If you need further assistance call your health care provider or the Health Unit at 1-800-563-2808. If you have severe symptoms, such as difficulty breathing, you should call 911 and mention your symptoms.

COVID-19 Update

Dear residents;

With the Provincial Emergency Order and Stay at Home Order, in effect as of Thursday January 14th, 2021, Council would like to provide a few updates and operation changes.

Understanding that added restrictions can be challenging for our community especially our vulnerable population, those that live alone and our community’s youth, Council commends your efforts to continue to stay health and stay safe. Please continue to be kind to one another, respectful and keep in touch virtually or from a distance. As a community we will get through this.

Effective January 15th, 2021:

1. Municipal Government is an essential service; continuity of business is important. At this time, due to the Provincial restrictions the municipal office is closed to the public. Staff remain onsite answering phone calls and emails during regular business hours.

Payments such as water/taxes can be received at the drop box at 172 Ontario Street. The drop box is monitored hourly, payments of cash will be applied to an account in full, over payments will result in an account credit.
2021 Dog tags, due annually on February 15th, can be arranged by calling the municipal office.
Residents requiring additional garbage tags can contact the office, making payment through the drop box and an envelope will be available for pick up at a predetermined time.
Pre-authorized payments and inquires for water or taxes can be done over the phone, documentation can be left in the drop box.

2. The Armour, Ryerson and Burk’s Falls Memorial Arena remains closed to the public. Staff are available to answer inquires as the building infrastructure is monitored daily by staff.

3. Public Works operations will not change.

4. The Heritage River Walk Trails remain open with restrictions of use for exercise, per the Order.

5. Council and Committee meetings will continue virtually and information regarding meetings are available upon request.

6. The Burk’s Falls and District Library remains closed to the public with curbside pickup available.

7. The Almaguin Highlands Health Centre and Pharmacy Building remains open to the public with masks required.

Lastly, Council would encourage residents to continue to shop local and support your Almaguin Highlands community businesses, while observing Order regulations. The Village website provides a community directory for eateries, shops, and services, please contact each business to inquire about curbside pickup, delivery and updated hours of service.
