At the regular meeting of September 22, 2020 Council accepted the resignation of Councillor Lewis Hodgson and declared his seat vacant.
The Municipal Act, S.O. 2001 C.25 states that when the seat of a member becomes vacant during term of office, Council may fill a vacancy by appointing a person with a Call for Nomination, review 2018 Election results for next candidate, or a byelection. Council has decided to appointment a member through a Call for Nomination.
A Call for Nomination is a self-nomination process where a qualified elector in the Village of Burk’s Falls can complete the application form and submit their name for consideration by Council. There is a detailed Council Vacancy Procedure outlined below. Please read for important dates and processes.
Any individual filling a vacancy must meet the eligibility requirements of office as outlined in the Act and the Municipal Elections Act as an eligible elector.
A candidate for office must be:
18 years of age or older
A Canadian citizen
A resident of Burk’s Falls, or an owner or tenant of land in the Village or the spouse of such
Not prohibited from voting under any other Act or disqualified from holding municipal office
Interested candidates must complete a Council Vacancy Application Form along with the Declaration of Qualification section, provide a piece of identification and proof of address eligibility when submitting in person to the Municipal Office prior to October 16, 2020 at 2:00 pm.
Each nominee may submit a one-page personal statement as well. There will be a special Council meeting on October 19, 2020 at 6 pm where each nominee will present to Council and questions will be asked so that Council can vote on who they wish to appoint.
