Do you own or represent a business in, or are you thinking of relocating to The Village of Burk’s Falls, Armour Township or Ryerson Township?  There are a number of Federal, Provincial and Regional programs that could help you or your organization reach your goals. Blue Sky Net

Blue Sky Net facilitates the development of information communications technologies (ICT) projects throughout Northern Ontario.  Their belief is that access to technology is crucial to the economic and cultural success of Northern Ontario.  Blue Sky Net has a three part approach to improving access to technology for business and residential consumers.  The three parts are: 

•Expanding infrastructure
•Developing applications
•Improving ICT knowledge

BEAM PROGRAM:  The BEAM program targets small businesses and assists them by alleviating some of the associated costs of establishing their business online or implementing and upgrading E-business applications.  The program provides:

•Assistance and consultation throughout the application process
•Access to training to prepare for E-business applications

•A list of Northeastern Ontario vendors to select from
•A rebate for up to 75% of eligible costs to a maximum of $5000 upon project completion.

 

E-Business Toolkit: The E-business toolkit provides access to information, e-books and other resources relating to e-commerce, social media, online marketing and more.  Visit the Blue Sky Network website to access this information and/or download the available e-books.

The Business Centre Nippissing Parry Sound Inc.

The Business Centre mission is to provide support to start-up and small enterprises during their first through fifth years of operation in Nipissing and Parry Sound by offering easy access to business consulting services and information concerning market research, business planning, management, marketing, technology and financing.

The office assists in the start-up of new and the expansion of existing businesses. Services include:

•One-on-one consultations

•Provision of relevant and timely business information
•Mentoring and networking opportunities

FEDNOR (Industry Canada)

FedNor is the Government of Canada’s economic development organization for Northern Ontario. Through its programs and services, and through its financial support of projects that lead to job creation and economic growth, FedNor works with businesses and community partners to build a stronger Northern Ontario.

Small Business Loans: FedNor supports a network of 24 Community Futures Development Corporations (CFDCs) in Northern Ontario. These local, not-for-profit organizations provide business financing, as well as business planning and other services.  For the Parry Sound District, the organizations are:

Youth Internship Program: Targets businesses that are interested in hiring a recent graduate (persons under 30 years of age) for eligible roles under the Northern Ontario Development Program or Economic Development Initiative guidelines.  Funding of up to $31 500 is available to a maximum of a 50% contribution (for businesses) and 90% contribution for not for profit organizations.

Futurepreneur Canada (Canadian Youth Business Foundation)

Futurpreneur Canada has been fueling the entrepreneurial passions of Canada’s young enterprise for nearly two decades. We are the only national, non-profit organization that provides financing, mentoring and support tools to aspiring business owners aged 18-39. Our internationally recognized mentoring program hand matches young entrepreneurs with a business expert from a network of more than 2,800 volunteer mentors.

Business Financing and Mentoring: Targets young entrepreneurs between 18 and 39 years of age.  This program offers support from the business planning phase through start up and ongoing operations.  Financing of up to $15 000 (for ages 18-34) and up to $45 000 (for ages 35-39) is available with better conditions than many major financial institutions.  

Futurepreneur Resources:  Along with financing assistance, Futurepreneur offers a wide variety of practical and informational resources.  These resources include:  business plan templates and an online business plan writer, marketing information, operational and financial planning resources, one on one mentoring and much more.

Innovative Initiatives Northern Ontario (IION)

IION, one of 18 Regional Innovation Centres (RICs) in Ontario, is a member of the Ontario Network of Entrepreneurs (ONE) and a member of the Northern Technology Alliance (NTA).  IION provides:

•Business advisory and mentoring services
•Direction and guidance on public and private funding including connections to angel investor networks
•Connections to sector, financial, or legal experts
•Access to market intelligence
•Promotes strategic business partnerships
•In-house funding opportunities
•Educational workshops, conferences and events
•Near North Resource Alliance: client/ecosystem support group

Step Forward Entrepreneurs Program (Worth a Cheque):  Target innovation and commercialization projects for small and medium enterprises.  Funding of up to $5000 for eligible costs.  Applicants must provide a cash contribution of 18% of the funds being requested.

Innovative Manufacturing and Facilitation Program:  Targets companies that are looking to accelerate innovation and commercialization in the advanced manufacturing sector.  Funding of up to $5000 available for eligible costs.  Applicants must provide a cash contribution of 20% of the funds being requested.

MCN is a not-for-profit corporation that creates economic value by building technology capacity through partnerships in the digital economy.  MCN works to build capacity and provide service in the following key areas:

Broadband for E-Business and Marketing (BEAM) Program - With the support of FedNor, the BEAM program targets small and medium size businesses who are looking to create or improve their understanding of e-business.  Eligible recipients can access up to 75% of the cost to design, develop or implement a new or existing website, content, mobile applications, and/or operational business applications.  The maximum contribution is $5000.

National Research Council Canada

NRC Industrial Research Assistance Program (IRAP): IRAP provides financial support to qualified small and medium-sized enterprises (fewer than 500 full time equivalent employees) in Canada to help them undertake technology innovation.  To be eligible, the applicant must demonstrate their objective to grow and generate profits through development and commercialization of innovative, technology-driven new or improved products, services, or processes in Canada.

Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC)

The NOHFC Offers assistance to businesses through several support streams.  Make sure to review the Growth Plan for Northern Ontario for a list of priority sectors for investment to see if your project could qualify.

Northern Business Opportunity Programs:

Business Expansion Projects: Targets expanding businesses within the priority sectors identified in the Growth Plan.  Funding of up to 50% of eligible costs up to $1 million.  Up to 30% may be in the form of a conditional grant with the remainder in the form of a repayable loan.  

Film and Television Industry Projects: Targets production companies and their projects as outlined in the eligibility requirements.  Funding of up to 50% of eligible costs up to $500 000 in the form of a conditional grant.  Application intake dates for 2015: July 1st, November 2nd

New Investment Projects: Targets competitive businesses that currently do not have a presence in Ontario that will expand operations to Northern Ontario and create jobs.  Funding is on a case by case basis and can be in the form of a conditional grant or a combination of conditional grant and repayable loan.

Small Business Start-up Projects: Targets start-up businesses within the priority sectors identified in the Growth Plan. Funding of up to 50% of eligible costs up to     $200 000 in the form of a conditional grant. 

Northern Ontario Internship Program: Targets private sector, public sector, and not-for-profit organizations located in Northern Ontario that are interested in providing training and work experience to recent graduates.  Funding of up to 50% of employee salary (private sector) or 90% of employee salary (public sector) up to a maximum of $31 500 for one year.

Social Entrepreneurship Evolution (SEE)

SEE is an emergent pan-northern collaborative whose focus is to support the infrastructure for Youth Social Entrepreneurship with an emphasis on collaboration, shared measurement and collective impact.

SEE is a three year project, lead by 
NORDIK Institute and its various regional partners that focuses on building a sustainable network by providing supports, setting up connections, sharing resources, building capacities, engaging youth, using community-based research methods, and promoting social entrepreneurship and the benefits it can bring to Northern Ontario.  SEE offers access to many resources including business planning information, networking information and funding and finance programs and information.

SENO Co-starter for Change Program: Targets social enterprises or social entrepreneurs wishing to ignite social change through the creation of a for-profit or not-for-profit business. By developing a business idea rooted in addressing issues that matter to people and the planet, entrepreneurs develop these ideas into viable initiatives that sustain economic development and pioneer social innovation. Funding is available up to $5000 for eligable expenses.  Applicants must reside in Northern Ontario and must contribute 25% of the amount being requested.  Next intake date:  July 2016
