THE VILLAGE OF BURK’S FALLS
COUNCIL MINUTES

The regular meeting of the Burk’s Falls council was held on Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at 7:00pm. Present were Reeve Cathy Still, Councillors Bruce Campbell, Rex Smith, Ron Russell, Lewis Hodgson (8:15pm). Councillor Ron Russell declared a conflict on the Ontario St. request.

Paul Sheets and Laura Murray from Branch 405 of the Royal Canadian Legion were present to request a reduction in the general portion of their property taxes. A by-law will be brought to the June meeting.

Fred Reynolds was present to request a realignment of the water easement on Syples St. property that he is purchasing. Council is in favour of the realignment provided all costs are borne by Mr. Reynolds.

Lorne Main from the Historical Society requested the use of the tent on August 8, 2009 (Heritage Day at the Museum) and for as many Council members as possible to attend. He also requested a financial donation towards the Historical Society to assist with expenses at the Museum.

Norm Harkness was present to follow up on his April request. He would like Council to proceed with the stop up close and sell Victoria St. road allowance.

Village Foreman and Water-Wastewater Operator, Len Hall, was present to give his report.

That the Council for the Village of Burk’s Falls approve the Accounts Payable as presented up to and including May 26, 2009 in the amount of $104,244.73 and hereby authorize the Clerk/Treasurer to issue cheques for same.

Lewis Hodgson – B. Campbell
The Council for the Village of Burk’s Falls have read the resolution circulated by the City of Cornwall regarding the Provincial Harmonized Sales Tax;

WHEREAS the Provincial Government has recently announced the harmonization of the 5% GST and the 8% PST; and

WHEREAS, the Harmonized Sales Tax will negatively impact the registration costs for minor sports by an increase in facility rental fees and registration fees; and

WHEREAS these increased costs will prevent some youth from participating in sporting activities; and

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council for the Village of Burk’s Falls send an appeal to the Provincial Government to exempt items related to the rental of recreation facilities and registration fees for minor sports to ensure that all youth are able to afford to participate; and

THEREFORE we forward our support to the Premier of Ontario and the AMO for their consideration.
