Drinking Water

   Burk's Falls drinking water starts as rain and snow falling in the residential area west of Main Street

  The rain and snow are soaked up by the earth in lawns, open spaces and play grounds.

  The water then moves slowly downward until it reaches the aquifer below. This is where your drinking water comes from.

   The aquifer beneath the residential area can be contaminated by over-application of fertilizers, gasoline spills, heating oil tank leaks, etc...

   Please be aware of the sensitive nature of our aquifer.

Your Responsibility

   Upgrade or remove buried home heating fuel tanks.

   Minimize chemical use and storage at home.

   Rid your home of unwanted chemicals during household hazardous waste days.

   Minimize fertilizer and pesticide use.

   Use de-icing salt only where needed.

   Clean Up any oil/gas spills with rags and dispose with garbage.

   Only purchase pesticides in amounts that can be used easily.

   Finish using old products before purchasing new.

   Use less hazardous household chemicals when possible.

   Stoop and scoop - pet droppings can be carried by storm water and infiltrate in areas near municipal wells.
