Municipal Highlights:
The Village of Burk’s Falls is located approximately 30 kms north of
Huntsville on the Highway 11 corridor.
The Village was incorporated in 1890 and has the Magnetawan River
bordering it on two sides. The Village began as an early logging community
due to the Magnetawan River and the access to Georgian Bay. Many
communities relied on the steam ships that docked in Burk’s Falls to bring
much needed supplies, mail and visitors.
The Municipality employees 3 full-time outside workers, 2 full-time inside
workers, 1 part time office worker as well as 4 summer students at the
Recreation Program, 3 summer students at the Towne Theatre. The village
shares the following services with the Township of Armour and the Township
of Ryerson: Library, Arena, Landfill Site, Recycling Centre, Fire
Department. Municipal Council is comprised of one reeve and 4 councilors.
Located in the village is M.W. Wittick Junior Public school for grades S.K.
to Gr. 6, and Land of Lakes School for Grade 6 French Immersion to Gr. 8
along with an ambulance base, Algonquin Health Centre for health care
services.

Summary of Information Collected through Consultation: Accessibility Plan

Council and staff of the Village of Burk’s Falls will identify, remove and
prevent barriers to people with disabilities when certain policies are
implemented and when issues and concerns arise. This process will continue
on an ongoing basis.

Initiative:
The “Advisory Committee” or “Council and staff of the Village of Burk’s
Falls” will review the current status of all building owned and operated
by the
municipality and the general policies and procedures of the municipality
and identify, remove “and or accommodate” and prevent barriers to people
with
disabilities.
Council will consider barriers for people with disabilities in all future
planning policies and future procedures.

The office building has a wheel chair ramp. No dedicated wheel chair
parking in front of the municipal offices, however there is ample parking
spaces
available for easy access.
Burk’s Falls Armour & Ryerson Union Public Library
39 Copeland Street, Burk’s Falls, Ontario P0A 1C0
The library is located on ground level and is accessible for wheelchairs.
There is ample parking available.
Young At Heart Seniors Centre,
39 Copeland Street (Upper), Burk’s Falls, Ontario.
The building is equipped with a wheel chair ramp. Parking is on ground
level for easy access into the building.
Armour Ryerson & Burk’s Falls Community Arena

The Arena has wheel chair parking and is equipped with an elevator to
access the Banquet hall.
By-laws, Policies, Practices & Services:
The current by-laws, policies and programs of the Village of Burk’s Falls
has no identified barriers for people with disabilities. All future
planning, policies
and by-laws will have consideration for people with disabilities.
Municipal Election:
The Municipal elections are held at the Young At Heart Seniors Centre to
ensure wheelchair accessibility. Parking spaces are available and the
building
has enough space to accommodate people with disabilities.
Status: Review has been completed on: September 23, 2003
Decision Making Review: No barriers identified.
Targets & Actions:
Updates will be made to the accessibility plan when areas of concern are
determined and resolved. Policies, By-laws and procedures implemented will
ensure that barriers are eliminated and prevented.
ADDENDUM TO
BY-LAW 23-2003
MUNICIPAL ACCESSIBILITY BY-LAW
Further to By-law 23-2003, adopted September 23, 2003, please be advised
that a minor committee comprising of municipal councilor and (1) one
person
from the disabled community, met on several occasions to discuss the Draft
plan and identified items to be added to the official submission as per
Sec
11(2).
1. Snow removal at the 3 official disabled parking locations.
ACTION: Will be addressed per snowfall.
2. Change the window at the Village office from crank out (obstructs
wheelchair
ramp) to sash type.
ACTION: Will change the window prior to December 31, 2003.
3. Small ramps needed at the Village office main door to improve wheel
chair
access.
ACTION: Will install Handicap sills before December 31, 2003.
4. No automatic doors at Arena or Library.
ACTION: Will explore the costs of installation by discussing with Arena
Board
and Library Board.
